Welcome to the second episode of our Summer Blogging School! 😊

In this episode, we took a closer look at blogging and analysed three websites featuring blogs: Iza baštenskog zida, Moć muzike and the Institute for Mediation. We also added four blog posts to Iza baštenskog zida and published another post on the Škola web dizajna website.

Different Blogs, Different Topics

Iza baštenskog zida is an online shop that also features a blog. Visitors can find advice, stories and content related to gardening, cooking and homemade products.

One example we discussed was a post about products with the interesting name Komite, hot pepper sauces made by a family. These sauces can be used to enhance various dishes, sandwiches and other meals.

Another website we explored was Moć muzike (The Power of Music). Its blog appears in the News section. Marija Pešić, the author of the photographs, has been working in photography since 2016. Alongside galleries from concerts featuring regional and international performers, visitors can find concert announcements and other interesting information.

We also analysed medijator.org, the website of the Institute for Mediation, Negotiation and Public Policy. Its Current Affairs section demonstrates how blogging can be used to share information and insights on a completely different subject.

Our main conclusion was simple: whatever topic you choose to write about, there are people who may be interested in it. The key is to identify your target audience and build meaningful connections with your readers.

Practical Blogging Examples

On the Škola web dizajna website, we published a post announcing the Summer Blogging School. We had previously written about Evernote, a useful tool for organising notes, tasks and ideas.

This demonstrated that blog content can come from everyday experiences: the tools we use, projects we work on and lessons we learn along the way.

Getting Ready to Install WordPress

The final part of our second episode brought us closer to our shared goal: enabling everyone to create their own website using WordPress.

We learned how to install WordPress on a local computer using Local WP, a beginner-friendly application. We also discussed MAMP, which provides another way to set up a local development environment, although the process involves a few additional steps.

Working locally allows us to build and experiment with websites without immediately purchasing hosting or a domain name. Once the website is ready, it can be moved online.

Throughout the programme, we planned to create a new WordPress installation for each upcoming blogging exercise.

What's Next?

In the next episode, we will start building a website through the WordPress dashboard. We will explore themes, plugins, widgets, pages, posts and other essential concepts that make up the WordPress ecosystem.
